Some commercial producers use preservatives to give their sausages more shelf life while others rely on high amounts of salt and smoke to act as natural preservatives.

Bratwursts come in two flavors: regular (cooked) or fresh (raw). Usually they are sold by length rather than weight, with each link measuring about 6 inches long. The standard serving size for most people is 3-4 links depending on how hungry you are. A regular brat made from pork shoulder meat will be pale in color while the version made from veal will have a creamy, almost pinkish hue. The color difference comes from the higher ratio of myoglobin in young animals.

Instead of just eating one large sausage apiece they were split into smaller pieces while still attached to each other! And thus the bratwurst was born.

But not all Germans are fans… There are some people who do not particularly enjoy the taste of this German staple. But do not count out sausage just yet! There are a number of variations out there for you to taste. Wienerwurst, Rote Wurst and the famous Bockwurst – all with their own distinctive tastes that make them special in their own way! And it is very popular all over the word. For example: 

Firstly, in the United States, the bratwurst is a popular item at sports events and summertime parties. In Chicago, where food trends have been known to influence the rest of the world, this special sausage has become quite popular. “Chicago-style” refers to a hot dog or Polish Sausage which includes a German-style poppy seed bun topped with chopped onions, sliced cucumbers soaked in vinegar and tomato wedges – all surrounded by a pickle spear! Yum!! The next time you are near Wrigley Field you should definitely stop by and get one of these wursts for yourself! Not only do they enjoy them at sporting events but also take part in the American tradition of regional flavors. And just like barbecue, pizza and tacos – they have their own version of the bratwurst!

Secondly, the Wisconsin Brat: This state is known for its love of “brats” so much so that it has become a staple food there! The residents in this northern state are particularly fond of beer added to their sausage because this region is home to some of the best breweries around. This addition makes them hardier flavored with tangy notes to compliment their traditional taste. They also use red cabbage as opposed to sauerkraut which gives them a slightly sweeter flavor (and makes them look pink!). What could be better than drinking a cold beer while enjoying one of these tasty sausages on game day?

Thirdly, the state of Iowa, home to the famous Field of Dreams, has long been known for its quality pork. This tasty meat is used in their traditional brats which are made with ground pork and bacon – both smoked before being put into casings. They also add some nutmeg to their recipe which you can taste somewhat in the aftertaste! The size factor… As with most sausages you have your mini brats that are approximately 6″ or so in length and then there are the full sized ones which measure up to 12″. Either way, they are just as tasty! And if you are having a party these mini ones would be great appetizers along with some sliced bread for your guests to enjoy on the side!

Next, the Bratwurst in Canada: most people think of hot dogs or sausage sandwiches when they think about this Canadian treat. But did you know that there are two different variations? The first is known as white bratwurst (and looks like our traditional kielbasa) and the other is known as Weisswurst. The latter has a slightly different taste and comes from Bavaria in Germany where it was first made.

I would not say this is exclusively a Wisconsin thing, though our state has turned it into an art form.

Everyone seems to have their own opinion on how long they should be boiled: 1 minute, 10 minutes, 20 minutes? What is the correct answer? It depends on who you are asking and what type of brats you are cooking. Brats come in all sizes and types so it would depend on whether or not they are smoked or fresh (fresh bratwursts will cook faster than smoked bratwursts),  and what type of casing they have. If the brats are fresh, meaning they were packaged up this morning, you can go ahead and boil them for 5 minutes or so. If they are a little on the older side, 10 minutes should do the trick just fine. How long do you boil brats? I would always start out at 5 minutes and then keep an eye on them from there. Be sure to check that the center is 165 degrees before you take them off. You do not want to overcook your brats! Also, if you plan on cooking them in beer make sure not to add it in at the beginning because alcohol does not evaporate like water does when boiling.

In Wisconsin we like to pair our brats with beer, onions, ketchup, and mustard. The Beer Brat Sauce (recipe below) is one of my favorite sauces to use for brats. Also, cheese curds are a big hit here too; perfect match with some fresh onions. If you are looking for something not as heavy try out this recipe for oven roasted chicken bratwurst. It is great if you want something quick because it only takes about 10 minutes to grill them up.

Why does it matter how long you boil them for?

Because, if you overcook them then they become hockey pucks and that is sad. You can use this same technique to cook bratwursts in a pan on the stove top too. This method works with any type of sausage and also for making cheeseburgers. Both sausages and burgers need to be cooked till the internal temperature reaches 160 degrees F or until they are no longer pink inside. Bring a large pot of water to boil while preparing your brats. You want enough water so that when they are added, there will be at least an inch above the surface of the brats. Once your water comes to a rolling boil add your brats. During this time you can prepare your outdoor grill, or indoor griddle by heating up the surface to about medium-high. When the brats have cooked in boiling water for 15 minutes remove with a slotted spoon and place on a hot oiled grate over direct heat. Continue cooking until nicely browned on all sides. This will take from 7-10 minutes total. If you are using a griddle indoors, preheat it to 350 degrees F and place your brats on there, again cooking until they are nicely browned on all sides, which will take from 7-10 minutes total. Brush liberally with an herb infused olive oil during the last few minutes of cooking if desired.  

How long do you boil brats? Brats are done when the internal temperature reaches 160 degrees F. During grilling, basting with your favorite condiment can produce a tasty glaze. For bratwurst that is to be served cold, grill over indirect heat till they reach an internal temperature of 110 degrees F before removing from the grill. The whole thing takes about 20 minutes to cook off completely, longer if you want to chill them thoroughly for serving later on. Health benefits of eating brats

Bratwurst is a rich source of proteins. It contains about 12gm per 3 oz serving. A 100 grams bratwurst has 860 calories and nearly all the necessary vitamins and minerals including vitamin B12, zinc, iron, phosphorus, selenium etc. It also contains 14% RDA of cholesterol that can be reduced by trimming away visible fat before cooking it. Bratwurst does not have carbohydrates in it but it does contain a significant amount of protein with less than 0.5 gm carbohydrate content in each ounce serving.

Bratwurst can be enjoyed by everyone including diabetic people like one bratwurst (3 oz) serving has only 240 mg Sodium, 5gm carbohydrate content, 28 grams protein content with only 2 gm Fat, no Trans Fats and 45 mg Cholesterol. All these features make this sausage a good choice for diabetics even though it may have higher calorie content than other meats.

Unlike other sausages that are high in fat, Bratwurst has less than four grams of fat per serving which makes this meat a healthier alternative to choose from when trying out new ways to cook your meat.  It is not the healthiest meat out there, but it has less fat and no carbs which makes it a healthier alternative in comparison to most meats like pork and beef.  Bratwurst has more than 10% of your recommended daily allowance of protein so you can count this as one of your main sources of protein when eating whole meals made with this dish. Bratwurst also contains 30% of the RDA for vitamins such as vitamin B6, riboflavin, niacin, pantothenic acid and thiamine. It also carries small amounts of minerals such as iron, phosphorus and selenium which are essential in keeping your body running properly through various chemical reactions that take place.

On the other hand, one of the main concerns when it comes to eating brats is the fact that they are very high in cholesterol. If you are not careful about how often you eat brats, this meat can cause serious problems with your health since too much cholesterol can clog up your arteries and put your heart at risk of various cardiovascular diseases. Brats are awesome on the grill or on a campfire, but let’s face it, sometimes you just do not have the time to cook them outside over an open flame. But what if I told you that you could cook brats indoors in less than half the time of cooking on your standard gas or charcoal grill? All you need is one pot and your stove top, and in less than 30 minutes you can eat like a king (or queen) with this quick and easy indoor camping recipe! (for two)

Ingredients: Two brats, cut in half to fit in the skillet better if longer than average German sausage. One small sweet onion, sliced. 1/4 stick of butter (or margarine). Garlic salt to taste and fresh cracked pepper to taste.

How long do you boil brats? There are some steps to make a brasts dish:

Firstly, Brown brats on both sides over medium high heat in a skillet coated with nonstick spray or olive oil. You can probably fit all four halves without any problem, but if they are too snug to cook properly, split them lengthwise first.

Additionally, Bratwurst with Potato Salad Ingredients are 1 bratwurst per person, 4-5 medium red potatoes per person, 2 hard boiled eggs per person, 1/4 cup of diced onion per person, 1/2 teaspoon salt & pepper to taste, Mayonnaise or salad dressing. Instructions – Cook brats until they are brown, boil potatoes until they are soft and rub the eggs on a grater. Once the brats are browned put them in hot water to finish boiling them. Once boiled, cut the brat lengthwise and place on a bun with salad dressing or mayonnaise (if you want), potato salad, diced onion and top of bun.

If you want to add more flavor to the bratwurst instead of the water in which you boil them use beer or beef broth. There are many options that you can choose one, such as: first ingredients are 1 package Weißwurst per person, 1/2 cup vinegar per person, 1/4 teaspoon salt per person Instructions. Poach Weißwurst one at a time in simmering water for 5 minutes. Drain the cooked Weißwurst on paper towels. Before serving, place each one in a hot skillet with 1/4 cup vinegar to heat through.

Second ingredients are 8 bratwurst, 2 green bell peppers, 4 medium onions Instructions – Cut bratwurst, green pepper and onion into small pieces. Once the brats are browned, place them in a cast iron pan with the other ingredients. Stir fry for 20-25 minutes on medium heat or until the onions have become clear and transparent. Third ingredients are 1 can of Bavarian Beer per person, 4 red potatoes peeled and cut into cubes, 3 carrots cut into rounds, 4 Kosher pickles cut into rounds, 1 cup of celery cut into small pieces. Instructions – Boil the potatoes until they are tender and can be pierced with a fork. After removing from water, plunge them immediately in cold water to prevent overcooking. Boil carrots for five minutes or until al dente. Cook Kosher pickles for five minutes or until al dente. Cook celery for five minutes or until al dente.

Fourth ingredients are 1 cup of chopped ham per person Instructions-Once the brats are browned, place them in a cast iron pan with the other ingredients and cook for 10 minutes on medium heat or until the brats are cooked through and the ham is thoroughly heated. Fifth Ingredients are 1/2 cup of ketchup per person, 1 tablespoon of caraway seeds per person Instructions – Once your bratwurst is browned place it in a pot with the other ingredients and cook for 10 minutes on low heat or until everything is thoroughly heated. The last ingredients are 1 cup of sauerkraut per person, Salt & pepper to taste Instructions – Place bratwurst in a pot with sauerkraut and stir on medium heat until the brats are browned and thoroughly heated (about 15 minutes).

How long do you boil brats? Once your potatoes, carrots, pickles and celery are cooked, brown the brats over medium heat in a pan with butter or oil (enough to coat the bottom of the pan). The rule is 10 minutes per inch of brat thickness. do not worry about pricking it with a fork as this will release the fat from the meat. Also, do not crowd them or they will not get nice and brown.

In other words, you can preheat your grill to medium high. If you have a cover, even better so the brats still have steam from the inside while cooking on the outside which gives you a nice crispy skin. You can also add soaked wood chips for some extra flavor. Sometimes, you can get an accurate reading of doneness, using a meat thermometer. 160 degrees is how you want them to turn out since they will continue to cook even after being removed from the grill. You can also bake on a sheet pan in the oven at 400 degrees for about 15 minutes or until desired doneness (please note that you will not get that nice brown crispy skin this way). Serve on deli rolls or high quality hot dog buns with ketchup, spicy brown mustard, sauerkraut and diced white onions.

You can also serve with side dishes of baked beans, potato salad or coleslaw. If you have a deep fryer, you can also pan fry them in that. Put enough oil to cover the brats and cook until browned on both sides or until an internal temperature of 160 degrees is reached. After boiling, grill for 10 minutes per inch of thickness. If using a pan or oven, cook at 400 degrees for about 15 minutes or until an internal temperature of 160 degrees is reached.

The article states to use a thermometer when measuring the cooking time, but it does not state to insert it into the meat while cooking. I would recommend inserting the thermometer while cooking, especially if you are baking them in an oven since this will provide more accurate results.

Once boiling, reduce to a simmer and cover for 15 minutes. Uncover and simmer for another 5 minutes. You want the brats soft and tender in the middle, but not falling apart. Serve with dark, hearty bread to sop up the beer gravy at the bottom of your bowl.

Sometimes, you can use other recipes for that dish. In a large pot, add two bottles of beer and heat to a boil. Add in brats and place the lid on top to trap the steam inside. Cook for about 20-25 minutes or until you see that they are firm and cooked through. Drain off beer from the pan and serve brats with a side of your favorite mustard. I used a different beer because I ran out of the other one so I would recommend using the kind that is recommended in the original post. In my opinion, even though it was tasty, I do not think it really added any extra flavor to the brats. It did not add much more flavor than just using a can of beer and it took more time, so I probably won’t make the extra effort again. Overall, they were tasty brats that we enjoyed with some sauerkraut.

Next time, I think I will try this method for cooking chicken breasts to see if it adds any flavor to them as well. Makes about 10 brats and 1 bottle of beer (I used blue moon), 10 bratwursts, 1/2 tbsp dry mustard, more to taste if necessary. Mix ingredients together in a bowl until it forms a paste. Spread over all sides of the brats and place them on the grill. Grill for 20 minutes or until cooked through. The famous Milwaukee Brat, grilled or boiled in beer. They can be found at many ballparks across the US, often to accompany a nice smoked brat. All it takes is smoked sausage, beer and onions.

Additionally, using Zesty Italian sausages. Grill it like you would a hot dog over high heat for 10 minutes in the beer mixture. Beer is said to tenderize brats due to its yeast content; it also heightens the flavor of everything else involved in the process. The yeast breaks down the proteins in the meat so it can be easily digested, making brats healthier. Beer also acts as a cooking liquid and adds flavor to your grilled brats. The best part about cooking brats with beer is that you can experiment with different types of beers. Just avoid using any type of fruity beer or beer with a high level of alcohol. The ideal beer for cooking brats is one that is on the bitter side, such as a pale ale or an India pale ale (IPA). In a large pot add some oil to the pan and cook the brats for 10 minutes. After 10 minutes, turn them over and cook for another 5-10 minutes until they are browned on both sides. Then place them back in the pot with onions and cook uncovered for about 15 more minutes until the onions caramelize and have a nice brown color to them. Then add beer and let simmer for about 10 minutes. Remove brats from pot and place on grill or in an oven at 400 degrees until heated through, then put back into the beer mixture one last time to reheat for a few minutes.
